AUGUST
THEME: DOG DAYS REVISITED
by Simone Butler
As promised, I'm
catching some rays at the beach. Specifically, Moonlight Beach in
Encinitas, where my cousins and I once bodysurfed the summers away.
I even slathered on some Bain de Soleil, for old time's sake.
It's easy
to revert to favorite activities of youth now, as Mercury is in
retrograde motion from July 22 to August 15. Because the retrograde
happens in Leo, sign of creative accomplishments and playful fun,
it's good to cast a backward glance at our glorious former selves.
Revisit old haunts and let nostalgia carry you back to aspects
of yourself you may have left behind. You might be drawn to contact
people from your past, or they may get in touch with you. It's all
about completion now.
With 100 degree-plus
temperatures all over the nation, you may as well relax and enjoy
the dog days of summer, because by forcing things to happen under
Mercury retrograde, you'll just be barking up the wrong tree. Mental
Mercury in backward motion favors the right brain, so let your creative
inner child run free.
Ever wonder
where that curious phrase "dog days" comes from? It's connected
to Sirius, the "dog star," whose companion, Sirius B, orbits it
like a faithful canine. The ancient Egyptians associated the flooding
of the Nile at this time of year with Sirius rising brightly in
the night sky. In Egyptian teachings, as in many ancient mystery
schools, the closely guarded secrets concerned our relationship
with these special stars. The Dogon of Mali, whose oral lineage
goes back thousands of years, recall the descent of whirling spaceships
carrying dolphin-like creatures that brought advanced culture to
mankind, and may even have mated with the natives. These beings
left the Dogon with detailed knowledge of their Sirian homeland,
including specifics on Sirius B, invisible to the naked eye.* Now
there's some information to get your right brain going!
Once I read
a fable about following your intuition. It featured a person walking
backward, led by the barking of a faithful dog. Attempting (unsuccessfully)
to find this tale on the Internet, I stumbled across another, equally
appropriate Mercury retrograde symbol: the mythical Ouzelum. This
fabulous bird flies backward, and thus does not know where it is
going, but likes knowing where it has been. So, when the logical
mind goes on holiday, as it does three times a year for three weeks
at a time, take advantage of the opportunity to fly backward for
a while. Like the Ouzelum, let your instincts guide you. And, enjoy
those magical childhood memories!
