JANUARY
THEME: CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN
by
Simone Butler
"When you make
your peace with authority, you become authority."
---Jim Morrison
January is
a tough month. With Sagittarian holiday revelry behind us, we face
the sober Capricorn reality of a new year. Time to set goals, pay
off debts, shed those extra pounds.
I have mixed
feelings about Capricorn. As a Cancer, it's my opposite sign-the
worldly, accomplished energy that coaxes me out of my shell and
makes me whole. Capricorn is warm, witty and reassuringly stable-with
the patience to get to the top of the mountain. Yet this sign that
rules the dead of winter can also be cold. To "get the job done,"
Capricorns can distance themselves from emotions in a way Cancers
never could.
The Sun, Mercury
and Venus are in Capricorn now, followed by Mars mid-month. Taking
care of business is the order of the day. And, the retrograde motion
of Saturn, Capricorn's ruler (Dec. 6 - April 19), challenges us
to claim our internal authority. What area of life calls out
for your concentrated focus and effort? Hint: look to whatever
is stressing you most. This is particularly true for Leos and Capricorns,
but applies to all.
When I first
saw the above quote from Sagittarian bad-boy rocker Jim Morrison,
I thought it was an injunction to not "sell out." Then I realized
he was saying that you become your own person when you cease to
rebel against external authority. This is a perfect lesson for Saturn
retrograde, a time that can lead to frustration if we reject what
Saturn wants for us. Perhaps you need to start weight training,
or to strengthen other areas of your life that are weak and flabby.
Is Saturn telling you to beef up your bank account by charging what
you're worth, or say "No" to excessive demands?
The year 2007
features unprecedented opportunities for change. The incoming energies
of the Fifth Day of the Mayan Calendar have thrown many of us for
a loop, yet they also opened exciting portals for manifestation.
To strengthen a New Years intention, choose a symbolic picture for
your desktop background. I intend to join Oprah and Gayle at Miraval
Spa in Tucson in March (see Jan. issue of O Magazine for contest
details). So, I went to the spa's website and captured a picture
of it to set where I'd view it daily.
Be careful
to not pile too many New Year's goals on your back as you climb
the mountain, though, or you'll set yourself up for a tumble. If
an exercise program or other big change is too much for you now,
repeating a simple affirmation like "All is well" on a daily
basis may be enough to get you in sync. Take good care of yourself
and be patient as the Capricorn goat slowly makes his upward climb.
The sure-footed path may not be the most exciting one, but it will
get you where you need to go.
