JULY ESSAY: MAN OF THE HOUR
by Simone Butler

He's hot! He's on fire! An Inconvenient Truth is the must-see movie of the moment. Al Gore's "global warming show" brings us the right man, the right message and the right transits converging in an awesome way to catalyze change.

As my friend and I entered the theater, we wondered what we were getting ourselves into. Would we feel so depressed by our planet's dire situation that we'd be overcome by despair? On the contrary! Gore's presentation was hard-hitting yet inspirational. When the Oval Office was denied him, this long-time environmental advocate recommitted his life to spreading the truth about our planetary emergency in a last-ditch effort to wake people up before it's too late.

He's given this presentation globally over a thousand times. The former vice president was warm, witty and passionate in describing our current climate crisis, the myths and misconceptions that surround it and what we can do to turn things around.

A fiery Aries Sun sign, Gore's natal chart also has Mars (warrior), Saturn (taskmaster), Pluto (transformer) and Ascendant (image) in kingly Leo. Gore is coming into his own and finding his global calling at 58 as Saturn triggers these planets. His stature is undeniable-and it's due to the fact that he's championing a cause bigger than himself. This cycle of greatness stretches from August 05 through May 07, though it peaks next month at his Saturn Return. This coincides with a Saturn/Neptune opposition in the heavens, which last occurred in 1972. Remember the Arab oil embargo? Saturn rules limits; Neptune rules, among other things, oil. It will be interesting to see what role Gore may play as this cycle repeats. More on this in next month's essay.

July is a study in contradictions, as mental Mercury turns backward on the 4th (until the 28th) while jovial Jupiter moves forward on the 6th after four months of retrograde motion. We may not know whether we are coming or going, especially during the first week of the month. Jupiter's forward momentum brings increased flow and benefits with whatever was put on hold in March, especially for those with Scorpio, Sagittarius or Pisces Sun or Ascendant. But we also need to chill a bit as Mercury moves backward; its retrograde phase is a time to complete the past and delve deeper inside for problem-solving. This is particularly true for those with Gemini or Virgo Sun or Ascendant.

Now that we're past the Mars/Saturn conjunction of June, you may feel as if the rules have changed. It should be clear to you what's working and what isn't; perhaps you've committed to establishing new habits in some way. A bit of backsliding is allowed under Mercury retrograde; don't be too hard on yourself. But heed the message of An Inconvenient Truth: we are entering a brave new world in which our actions and thoughts are all-important.

What can you do? If you're in California, you can help stop the burning of fossil fuels; just call the Dept. of Water and Power and ask to switch to Green Power. It's only $3 extra a month for every $50 you spend on your bill, which goes toward building more wind, hydro and solar plants. Or, find other tips at www.climatecrisis.net. Add your voice to the rising energy of our Sacred Feminine earth. We make a difference!
